Navigation for cycling in Kyoto

This guide is for casual cyclists visiting Kyoto seeking a simple GPS navigation solution.

Google Maps doesn't support bicycle navigation in Kyoto.
While you can use Google Maps in car or walking mode, this isn't ideal because it won't prioritize bicycle-friendly routes.

I recommend app Mapy.com as the ideal, free, and straightforward choice for navigating Kyoto's streets with minimal data usage. Of course, you can also use some of your other favorite bicycle navigation apps. This recommendation is mainly to offer a solution that keeps the same simplicity as Google Maps without requiring complicated or pay-to-use cycling features.

Built on OpenStreetMap data, Mapy.com is bicycle ready, providing specific routing and the ability to download Kyoto maps for offline use. With a free account, you can easily plan, save, and manage your routes. If you don't need that, you can use it without creating an account.

For your convenience, every location on this site has links to both Mapy.com and Google Maps, allowing you to get directions directly from the Cycling Kyoto website with just a few clicks.

Important safety note

Ensure your rental shop provides a phone holder or bring your own if you want to use navigation.
Do not operate your mobile phone while cycling!

Always remember that while helpful, GPS navigation may not recognize every local bicycle restriction.
Be sure to familiarize yourself with Kyoto's cycling rules before you start your ride.
